The Audi A3-Three million cars and counting

Audi UK

Incredible success of Audi premium compact hatchback is highlighted by three millionth example to leave the line in Ingolstadt
17 years of enduring global appeal have just culminated in the production of the three-millionth Audi A3, the car which in 1996 stole a march on the German prestige ‘establishment' by spearheading the creation of the now flourishing premium compact class. Car number three million is a 2.0 TDI quattro version in five-door Sportback form, one of three attractive body styles currently available in the all-new, third generation A3 range, which for the first time also includes a four-door saloon option. More variants are set to follow.
"Three million automobiles in the compact class is quite a performance," said Dr. Frank Dreves, Board of Management Member for Production at AUDI AG. "This success is backed by a strong team and an efficient production system. With the Audi A3, we have created a new brand segment - we have been setting standards in the compact class with innovative technology and first-class quality for 17 years now."
In 2012, Audi produced a total of 152,993 A3 series cars at its plant in Ingolstadt, Germany. This total included A3 and A3 Sportback models, as well as S derivatives. The new Audi A3 Sportback, launched in 2013, has accounted for the highest proportion of this production volume: Each day, about 700 examples of this immensely popular variant roll off the assembly line.
Approximately 913,000 examples of the first Audi A3 were sold. That worldwide success continued with the second generation (2003-2013), which underscored the Vorsprung durch Technik brand's domination of this segment in terms of technology and quality. Nearly two million of these second generation cars were delivered to customers.
In late 2012, the completely new third generation car made its debut, and again set new benchmarks for quality, build integrity and technological sophistication at this level. Last month, the new A3 Saloon joined the three-door and Sportback variants, and later this year the new 300PS S3 and S3 Sportback will make their UK debuts, followed in early 2014 by the S3 Saloon.
All three A3 ranges offer a choice of exceptionally efficient, highly refined engines, including the 1.4 TFSI with Cylinder-on-Demand technology and 60.1mpg potential and the 1.6 TDI which pares CO2 output back to 99g/km. They combine these with fit, finish and equipment worthy of an executive class car, and also offer the opportunity to upgrade with sophisticated options such as Audi magnetic ride damper control, a ‘hands-free' parking assistant, swivelling adaptive cornering lights, a 705-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system, MMI touch fingertip data entry and Audi connect, bringing internet-based services to the car. In the near future, high-tech all-LED headlights will also be added to this list as an alternative to the more familiar xenon units.
Next year the A3 range will also embrace the future with its first hybrid variant - the petrol-electric A3 e-tron, capable of covering up to 188mpg while emitting as little as 35g/km of CO2 (according to the NEDC test). In the meantime, prices for the existing A3 range start from £18,280 and rise to £29,160, with the S3 and S3 Sportback priced at £30,640 and £31,260.

Chevrolet’s iconic Bowtie celebrates 100th anniversary

Chevrolet

Origin still a mystery, but 215 million cars and trucks have worn the badge since 1913
DETROIT- Chevrolet's globally recognised bowtie celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with 25 product launches helping the symbol find new roads around the world despite an origin that is still a bit of a mystery.
In 1913, Chevroletco-founder William C. Durant introduced the signature Chevy bowtie on the 1914 Chevrolet H-2 Royal Mail and the H-4 Baby Grand, centered at the front of both models.
The bowtie has adorned 215 million Chevrolets over the last century, 60 million of which are still on the road. A Chevrolet car, crossover or truck is sold every 6.39 seconds in one of 140 countries, and the brand set a sales record of 2.5 million in the first six months of the year. The bowtie's centennial is marked by new entries, such as the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel compact sedan in the U.S. and the Trax small SUV in 40 international markets.
"The Chevrolet bowtie is recognised around the world and has become synonymous with American ingenuity," said Chevrolet Chief Marketing Officer Tim Mahoney. "Whether you're pulling thousands of pounds through rocky terrain in a Silverado pickup or commuting in a Spark EV, Chevrolet's bowtie will always be at the very front of your travels."
While the bowtie has been present for 100 years, the details surrounding its origin are still uncertain. Stories range from Durant being inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel to a newspaper advertisement he saw while vacationing in Hot Springs, Va.
Durant's widow and daughter each have an alternative explanation.
According to Margery Durant, in her 1929 book My Father, Durant sometimes doodled nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table. "I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day," she wrote.
But in a 1968 interview, Durant's widow, Catherine, said the bowtie design originated from a Hot Springs vacation in 1912. While reading a newspaper in their hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed, "I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet." Unfortunately, Mrs. Durant never clarified what the motif was or how it was used.
But that nugget of information inspired Ken Kaufmann, historian and editor of The Chevrolet Review, to search out its validity. In a Nov. 12, 1911 edition of The Constitution newspaper, published in Atlanta, an advertisement appeared from by the Southern Compressed Coal Company for "Coalettes," a refined fuel product for fires. The Coalettes logo, as published in the ad, had a slanted bowtie form, very similar to the shape that would soon become the Chevrolet icon.
Did Durant and his wife see the same ad - or one similar - the following year a few states to the north? The date of the paper Kaufmann found was just nine days after the incorporation of the Chevrolet Motor Co. The first use of the bowtie by Chevrolet appeared in the Oct. 2, 1913 edition of The Washington Post with the words "Look for this nameplate" above the symbol.
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is the world's fourth largest car brand with annual sales of almost 5 million cars and trucks in more than 140 countries. Chevrolet provides customers with vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, high quality and Chevrolet MyLink intelligent connectivity. The UK Chevrolet line-up includes the Spark, Aveo, Cruze Saloon, Hatchback and Station Wagon, Orlando, Captiva, the legendary Camaro and Corvette sports cars and the extended-range Volt electric car. In 2013, Chevrolet is launching the all-new Trax small SUV and the all-new Corvette Stingray. More information on Chevrolet can be found at www.chevrolet.co.uk or media.chevrolet.co.uk

Toyota summer offers make hybrid the hot choice

Toyota (GB) PLC

Around the world millions of motorists are making the move to Toyota hybrid power, propelling the concept from a niche option to a rational choice that delivers on running costs, emissions, fuel efficiency and a quiet and refined driving experience. Here in the UK Toyota is raising the appeal of two of its leading hybrid models - Yaris and the British-built Auris - by launching a summer-long zero per cent finance offer that makes them more affordable than ever.
The deal, available for retail customers buying new cars between now and the end of September on a Toyota Financial Services Access PCP agreement, applies to all new Yaris Hybrid and Auris Hybrid models. More than that, customers choosing Auris Hybrid can take advantage of a further £1,000 Finance Deposit Allowance, which means they need to provide even less up front to secure the car they want.
The example finance quotations detailed below show that a new Yaris Hybrid can be had for just £169 a month, while the larger Auris Hybrid hatch can be secured with monthly payments of less than £200.
This offer is only one aspect of the all-round low ownership costs that are fundamental to Toyota's hybrids. The Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive system may be an advanced technology, but it is incredibly reliable and hard-wearing. Compared to conventional diesel and petrol powertrains, there are fewer components that need maintaining or replacing, which means lower servicing bills.
Official fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures for both models show that owners will be spending less money at the pumps and, thanks to sub-100g/km performance across the board, won't have to worry about an annual road tax (VED) bill. In terms of cleaner performance and air quality concerns, hybrid power outperforms diesel by producing near-zero NOx and particulates.
Matt Harrison, Toyota Commercial Director, said: "With Toyota's global hybrid vehicle sales accelerating past the three million mark, it's clear that the public have confidence in hybrid and appreciate the real-world advantages it delivers.
"It's our aim to make the benefits of our hybrid technology available to as a wide a range of customers as possible. To do this we have already extended our range of models from one - Prius - to six. Now we are adding an exceptional purchase offer that will bring hybrid within the budgets of even more people."
Toyota's summer zero per cent offers are also available on certain petrol and diesel versions of Aygo, Yaris, iQ, Auris and Verso. Full details can be found at toyota.co.uk.

World’s first full production fuel cell cars to arrive in the UK

Hyundai Motor (UK) Ltd

High Wycombe, 18 July 2013 -- Emission-free hydrogen powered vehicles will soon be operating in London. It is the intention that five Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell models - the first production fuel cell cars in the world - will be an integral part of the London Hydrogen Network Expansion (LNHE) project.
Hyundai Motor, as a supplier to the LHNE project, will join the existing consortium of companies with expertise in hydrogen transport infrastructure and operation, working to establish the UK's first hydrogen transport network covering London and south east England. The LHNE project, a government-backed initiative co-funded by the Technology Strategy Board, will put hydrogen-fuelled vehicles into daily business use and deliver the refuelling infrastructure to support their operation.
These fuel cell vehicles will be leased to key public and private fleet users in the capital. They are among the first of 1,000 examples that Hyundai has committed to produce between now and 2015 and are built on the same production line, in Ulsan, Korea, as the Tucson.
The majority of those 1,000 cars will be available in Europe where the European Commission has established a number of schemes, such as the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), to promote the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier with zero carbon content.
With various hydrogen projects concentrating on establishing hydrogen infrastructure in Europe, the timing is right for hydrogen-powered vehicles to accelerate the project.
World's first mass produced Fuel Cell vehicle
As the first car company in the world to assembly line-produce fuel cell vehicles, Hyundai has enabled not just the real start of Europe's Hydrogen Roadmap but also accelerated London's plans to become one of the major hydrogen capitals of the world.
For Hyundai, the philosophy behind the ix35 Fuel Cell project has been to produce a car that offers the same practicality, safety levels and driving experience as an ix35 driven by an internal combustion engine, but with zero tailpipe emissions.  That means comparable performance - 100mph maximum, 0-62mph in 12.5 seconds and a range of almost 370 miles from each tank - but with no emissions: the only emission is water.
Quick and easy refuelling
Just as importantly, a Fuel Cell vehicle can be refilled in two to three minutes and, in use, an ix35 Fuel Cell demands no compromise from the driver.
Although Hyundai has been developing its Fuel Cell vehicles for more than 15 years, it is only now - with the start of a viable hydrogen refuelling network in place -  that it can consider putting a fuel cell car into series production.
So after a number of ‘false dawns' for hydrogen-powered cars, this time the Fuel Cell vehicle has a genuine, clear and realistic future here in the UK. Much of this is down to the work of the London Hydrogen Partnership and that of other projects such as the London Hydrogen Network Expansion project which is led by Air Products.
With these key partners working together, hydrogen mobility is about to become a reality. Two hydrogen fuel stations are already open in the Capital - one of which has public access - with a third to come as part of the London Hydrogen Network Expansion (LHNE) project.
Ten-fold increase in Fuel Cell vehicles by 2015
A further three fuelling stations are planned by 2015, by which time it is expected that the number of fuel cell vehicles in London will have risen ten-fold from the initial five to at least 50 or more including passenger cars, buses and scooters.
Kit Malthouse, London Deputy Mayor for Business and Enterprise and Chairman of the London Hydrogen Partnership, said: "The work of the London Hydrogen Partnership and other projects has really catapulted London towards the forefront of the move to a hydrogen future.
"Battery electric vehicles are a great technology but like the fax machine they are only temporary and there is a great deal of consumer resistance towards them for all manner of reasons, including range and the time it takes to recharge them.
"Even though we have around 1,300 charging points in the capital you cannot guarantee getting a space outside your house to charge overnight: London is just too densely populated."
Hydrogen from renewables
"For me, hydrogen cracks all those problems and it also solves other issues along the way such as making best use of wind energy, for example. We also produce a huge amount of waste and we are looking at schemes that convert biomass into hydrogen. So as well as producing a clean fuel we would be reducing the amount of waste we put into landfill.
"These are early days, but I am tremendously excited by the prospects of London's hydrogen future. Hyundai is providing invaluable insights and bringing global experience to the Mayor's innovative low carbon, low emission transport activities."
Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK, said: "Hydrogen delivers considerable environmental benefits and we are looking forward to working closely with the other partners to drive forward its widespread introduction."
The London Hydrogen Partnership has initiated more than £50 million worth of hydrogen projects already. Its partners have been involved in the implementation of the two existing refuelling stations, the operation of five fuel cell London buses which joined the Transport for London fleet in 2011, with another three to join in 2013, as well as a fleet of hydrogen iconic London taxis, fuelled by hydrogen.

First city in Britain to get two new MG dealerships

MG Motor UK

Sheffield is to become the first city in Britain to have two new MG dealerships.
Eric Stead (Garages) Ltd in Ecclesfield will cover the north of Sheffield and Grant & McAllin in Rother Valley Way, Holbrook, will cover the south side of the city. They are both on target to open by the end of August, just ahead of the launch of the new MG3 supermini.
By the end of 2013 a further six MG dealerships are expected to open at key sites across the country. Discussions are also currently taking place with several other prospective dealers in major UK towns and cities.
MG has always been at the heart of Eric Stead (Garages), a former MG Rover outlet. The dealership on The Common, Ecclesfield has continued to have a new, unregistered MG on display - it's currently one of the last MGB GTs to be built.
Trevor Stead, the firm's Managing Director, said: "MG has always been an important brand for us and it's steeped in history and heritage. But it's the MG of the future that really excites me - I can honestly say that winning the MG franchise was one of the proudest and most exciting days of my life."
The dealership, started by Trevor's father in 1963, has a 10 bay workshop, a modern, open nine new car showroom and employs 23 people.
Four generations of the same family are behind Grant & McAllin, now run by Lee Atack. It's one of the oldest automotive businesses in South Yorkshire and began life in the bus and coach business.
In 2007 Grant & McAllin moved to a £2.2 million site in Rother Valley Way, just minutes away from Junction 31 of the M1. The 1.5 acre site includes a 10 bay workshop and a 25 car showroom.
Lee said: "MG has always been a brand that people love and respect and I share the same feelings. I can't wait to start selling the new breed of MGs. I think that the MG6 is a highly competitive vehicle and from what I've seen of the MG3 it's a brilliant package.
"Now everyone in Sheffield will have a local dealer and I look forward to working alongside Trevor in such exciting times."

Subaru safety confirmed by insurance stats

Subaru

Independent findings released today about car insurance claims show that drivers of the Subaru Impreza make fewer at-fault claims per 1,000 owners than any other model of car. In addition there are low levels of claims for Subaru generally, according to the research from leading comparison website MoneySupermarket.com.
In response to the report about Subaru drivers being the safest on the road, Subaru UK managing director Paul Tunnicliffe has said that he is "very much less surprised than everyone else seems to be."
Tunnicliffe commented: "We know from first-hand experience that many Subaru owners really care about their cars, seeing them as loyal and indispensable friends, and all Subaru's protect their owners and occupants with both symmetrical All-wheel drive and active safety technologies. The Subaru Impreza, Legacy, XV and Forester are all fitted as standard with Subaru's unique All Wheel Drive system, with great road holding benefits."
The research carried out by the popular consumer site was based on nearly 13.5 million quotes over the past 12 months, and "at fault" claims made in the last five years.

Welcome to Transport News Brief

SMMT Ltd

The CV sector is quite rightly subject to a higher level of scrutiny on safety issues than the much broader car sector.
The continuing improvement in HGV MOT pass rates is a good illustration of what can be achieved by operators that have both the will and the necessary investment. The truth is, despite portions of adverse public/media perception HGVs are safer now then they have ever been.

However, we must not be complacent, the LCV sector still has its issues; the persistent 50% MOT failure for this sector is worrying, as is the fact that more than 70% of LCVs stopped for a roadside check are overweight.

The SMMT has a working group looking at this whole subject and works closely with the DfT and it is good to see that VOSA will be focusing its enforcement efforts in this area. However, as an industry we also have a responsibility to raise awareness of the critical importance of regular safety checks and good maintenance practices among vehicle owners and operators.

FTA invests in Prince’s Trust - Get into Logistics

Freight Transport Association (FTA)

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has teamed up with The Prince's Trust to help unemployed young people across the UK move into the logistics industry.
Along with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), through Aspire its careers foundation, and the DHL UK Foundation - FTA has invested in The Prince's Trust Get into Logistics work experience programmes which will be run across the UK.
The Prince's Trust Get into Logistics programme is a two-week intensive course that gives unemployed young people hands-on experience in the logistics industry, as well as developing their job skills, confidence and motivation.
The need for nurturing talent in the industry was reflected in FTA's ‘2013 Logistics Report', which outlined the necessity to recruit and retain talent, in order to attract and develop young people with the skills the industry requires.
Theo de Pencier, FTA Chief Executive said:
"FTA is delighted to be investing in The Prince's Trust - Get into Logistics work experience programme. Logistics has often struggled to recruit and retain talent, as many don't realise what a wealth of opportunities the industry has to offer.  I have no doubt that this programme will help enhance those, and help nurture the talent of those young people who take part in it, ensuring they will develop their job skills giving them the confidence to succeed."
The young people undertake a work placement and take part in CV workshops and personal development classes. Once the programme comes to an end, they receive ongoing support for six months to help them retain their new job or to support them into one. The Princes Trust is looking to double the delivery of Get into Logistics programmes this year and aim to support over 200 young people through the programme this year alone.
Tim Slater, Chairman of The Prince's Trust's advisory group on Logistics, said:
"Too many young people feel that they will never reach their full potential. We are thrilled to be able to make a difference to the lives of young people in the UK and would like to hear from businesses that wish to support the project and can offer work placements so we can help many more."
Three in four young people supported by The Prince's Trust move into work, education or training.

All-New Ford Transit Connect Delivers Class-Leading Loadspace

Ford Motor Company Ltd

BRENTWOOD, Essex, UK, July 18, 2013 - Ford's all-new Transit Connect offers class-leading load-carrying ability to make work easier for all traders.
The new Transit Connect simplifies the transportation of awkward and bulky items with a load-through hatch in the bulkhead, fold-up front passenger seat and - via the widest opening in the class on the long wheelbase model (L2) - the unique ability to load a Europallet through the sliding side door.
A special profile at the top of the full steel bulkhead also offers the unique-in-class ability to accommodate 2.4m x 1.2m (8ft x 4ft) sheets in the L2 van; while the Kombi L2 features rear seats which fold into a flat load platform.
"We studied the loading and unloading of commercial vehicles to make sure we got the design just right," said Stephen Lesh, Transit Connect chief program engineer, Ford of Europe. "This van is ready for anything. It can haul all manner of tools and materials - and transport a work crew in safety and comfort."
Ford engineers developed the innovative load-through system to ensure the Transit Connect could safely transport long items such as pipes or rolls of flooring up to 3.4m (L2) and up to 3.0m in the short wheelbase (L1) version. This involved the development of a hinged access panel in the bulkhead and a special ‘fold and dive' mechanism for the outer passenger seat; creating a dished profile in the surface of the passenger seat back; and designing the instrument panel so long items could slide underneath.
The all-new Transit Connect also offers customers further smart features including:
The all-new Transit Connect van offers total load volumes of 2.9m3 (L1) and 3.6m3 (L2) with full bulkhead fitted, or 3.7m3 (L1) and 4.4m3 (L2) without bulkhead including the front loadspace area, both measured according to SAE; the van has a maximum payload of up to 1,000kg, matching the class-best figure. Deliveries of the new model are scheduled to start from the end of 2013.

Cheshire Fire Service Cadets win national road safety award

Brake
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Cadets have won a national road safety award, as part of a campaign to help save young lives co-ordinated by Brake, the road safety charity.
The 2young2die awards, sponsored by young driver insurance provider iKube, encourage young people to get creative and promote life-saving road safety messages to peers and wider community through powerful campaigns.
This year's winning entry is a series of three short films (watch here) researched, scripted and produced by teams of cadets from Congleton, Sandbach and Runcorn. The films, on the themes of speeding, drink-driving and seatbelts, were developed as part of The Fire Cadet Road Safety Video Project. The project was set up after the tragic death of Congleton Fire Cadet Hayley Bates in a road crash in September 2010. The project has been such a success that it will now be run annually, with films produced by cadets used by fire crews in workshops with local schools and colleges throughout the year.
The cadets will be presented with their award, along with prizes to help them continue promoting road safety, at Brake's annual reception at the Houses of Parliament in January.
Also highly commended in the awards was Jordan Bone, of Kings Lynn in Norfolk, who at the age of 15 was left paralysed by a crash involving a young driver. With the help of the charity Fixers, Jordan produced an inspiring video aimed at encouraging young people not to take risks and exploring the consequences of crashes. She has hosted workshops with teenagers where she uses her story to urge them to be responsible as drivers and passengers, and is planning a wristband campaign focusing on the need to ‘Think Twice' before taking risks. View her video.
To take part in the 2young2die awards, young people are asked to plan and deliver an original road safety campaign, using guidance from Brake, with entries including videos, posters and interactive workshops. The aim is to raise awareness among young people and others about how they can protect themselves, friends and people around them on roads. Entrants are also challenged to raise funds in support of Brake's work campaigning for safer roads and supporting people bereaved and injured by crashes.
Brake is inviting young people, educators and youth workers to register now for the 2013-14 awards, by visiting www.2young2die.org.uk/awards to get a free e-action pack to help them take part.
Laura Wheelton, fire cadet watch manager at Congleton, says "Our friend and fellow cadet Hayley was killed in a road crash because of speed, so it's something that has affected us personally and that's why our film focuses on the consequences of speeding. We wanted to pass on the message that speeding needs to stop. We'd like to make more films both about road safety and other safety messages. It was a good feeling when we were told that we'd won the 2young2die award.  We're proud that we have been able to turn something that has affected us so deeply into something positive.'
Paul Hancock, chief fire officer at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service says "I am thrilled that the Cadets have won this fantastic award for a project I know they are passionate about. I am sure it will play a key role in helping us to educate young drivers in a bid to keep them safe on our roads."
Jordan Bone says "I'm really pleased that Brake has recognised my campaign and is helping me spread my message. My campaign is important to me because I want a positive to come out of a negative situation. I hope that by sharing my story, young people will realise how important their lives are and think before taking risks on roads. You only have one life and you should make the most of it. I've managed to turn my life around and I feel quite proud of myself for pursuing my campaign, something I wouldn't have thought I was capable of before the crash.  If I could save one life then I will know it will have been worthwhile."
Rich Andrew, senior development officer at Brake, says "Young drivers are involved in one in four serious crashes on our roads, and often young people themselves are the victims. But young people can have a big impact in helping to put a stop to this needless loss of life and terrible suffering. The Cheshire Fire Service Cadets and Jordan Bone have shown great dedication to spreading road safety awareness and their powerful messages are reaching a large audience of young people. By promoting road safety and entering the 2young2die awards, other young people can make a difference in their community and support Brake's work helping families devastated by road crashes."
Ian Brown, managing director at iKube says "It is extremely important to promote road safety to young drivers, so iKube fully support Brake's campaign. Getting involved and campaigning to make their communities safer shows young people understand the dangers on the road and we hope they would identify these dangers when driving themselves. iKube fully endorse any activity that makes the roads safer for everyone and we feel that the 2young2die awards are a great way to get young people more active in road safety."
Road crashes are the biggest cause of death among young people [1], so raising awareness of road safety is vital. Young people have lots of choices to make about using roads safely and travelling in sustainable and active ways, and can help promote road safety by developing their own campaigns.
The 2young2die awards are all about young people taking action to make their communities safer and help their peer group protect themselves and others. They encourage using a range of media to promote messages that can save lives, prevent suffering, and promote socially-responsible lifestyles.

Go ahead for two new road schemes in the Midlands

Department for Transport (DfT)

Two major road schemes to upgrade key junctions on routes in the Midlands have been given the go-ahead today by the Roads Minister Stephen Hammond, after successfully completing the final stages of the planning process.
Improvements to the M1 J19 (A14) Catthorpe interchange near Rugby and A45/A46 Tollbar End junction near Coventry which are both used by over 90,000 vehicles each day, can now move to the next stage of development. This means that the Highways Agency can now continue to work with contractors on progressing and completing detailed project designs for both schemes, with construction work due to start between January and March 2014.

Roads Minister Stephen Hammond said:

"It is great that we have been able to give the green-light for both of these important interchanges and they can now move a step closer towards construction.

"These improvements are vital for the economy, but most importantly for motorists in the Midlands, in reducing congestion levels and making journey times quicker in and around these two busy junctions."

Today's decision to progress both schemes is the result of the Department for Transport and the Department for Communities and Local Government accepting the planning and environmental recommendations made by independent inspectors. The reports outlining the recommendations for the M1 J19 (A14) Catthorpe interchange and the A45/A46 Tollbar End junction can be found on the Department for Transport's website.

Manheim develops bespoke locator for Lexus

Manheim

As digital partner of prestige marque Lexus, Manheim has built and delivered a unique Approved Pre-Owned Locator.
Representing an evolution in design and functionality, the locator offers careful attention to detail and enables customers to easily access information, images and data across a range of media devices.
The locator utilises the latest ‘deep page' format, which means that customers will be able to view the information on all media devices with no pagination, just ‘show me more' controls. Images of selected vehicles will be proactively displayed in a modular format with integrated in-page zoom, enhancing the viewing experience of the vehicle with device-specific functionality for tablet or mobile phone use. In addition, the locator has introduced the ability for the owning centres to provide specific details on a car's service history.
As the importance of social signals and user generated content continues to play an expanding role on shaping search engine rankings, the new locator has seen a brand new Question Time area developed to assist both the searcher and search rankings. Question Time offers independent and more in depth information in response to the most relevant questions asked on the web about the brand, the approved pre-owned programme, vehicle ranges and models - including hybrid vehicles. By delivering factual and third party reviews and information, the locator will further reaffirm the consultative nature of Lexus.
A dedicated aftersales section has also been introduced, called LexusCare, which highlights vehicle accessories, extended warranties, service plans, benefit upgrades and a ‘service you lexus' online function.
Andy Simpson, national sales operations manager from Lexus, commented: "Offering all of our customers the same level of service across the entire website is important to us, so it was imperative that the Approved Pre-Owned Locator reflected our new style. Having worked with Manheim for over 8 years, we knew they would deliver a locator that captures the essence of our brand with a forward thinking approach whilst introducing new elements that would continue to set us apart."
Le Etta Pearce, sales and operations director, Manheim Retail Services, said: "Working closely with Lexus to develop a bespoke locator of this kind shows our on-going commitment to bringing the latest in digital developments to the automotive market place and further endorses our understanding of the changing consumer behaviour to offer a more absorbing user experience."
Rachel Rollason, national marketing manager from Lexus, added: "The Approved Pre-Owned Locator now completes the full experience for a visitor to our website, presenting both our new and used vehicles in a distinctive and unique style."
