Sales rise at Inchcape

Sales at Inchcape have risen by over 10 per cent in the third quarter.

In the three-month period to 30 September, volumes rose 10.2 per cent year-on-year with year-to-date sales now up by 8.9 per cent.

The international automotive group said trading remained in line with expectations. The announcement follows a record set of interim results in the UK when the company announced profits of £23.2m – an increase of 49 per cent.

Kerkorian pulls representative out of GM board

Kirk Kerkorian, General Motor’s key investor, has pulled his representative from the company's board following the collapse of the alliance talks with Renault-Nissan.

Jerome York resigned on Friday, criticising the GM board’s approach to the alliance and raising doubts about the company’s long-term outlook.

In his resignation letter York wrote: “I have grave reservations concerning the ability of the company's current business model to successfully compete in the marketplace with those of the Asian producers. I have concluded there is little point on my remaining on the board.”

Smart to credit customers with new card

Smart has become the latest automotive brand to offer customers a credit card in support of the brand.

The Smart credit card made its debut on 8 October and is part of an agreement with Daimler Chrysler Financial Services and HBoS card services.

Alex Watkins, general manager marketing and product development at DCFS, said: “We believe the smart credit card represents a unique place in the market. “The card has now been launched to over 60 smart retailers across the UK."

Caffyns struggles with site disposal

Caffyns, ranked 51 in the Motor Trader Top 200, is continuing to experience delays with the sale of its site in Hove, Sussex.

The site had been sold to Berkeley Homes on condition of obtaining planning permission. However, the appeal against the planning refusal by the local authority has been unsuccessful and the contract with Berkeley has been terminated.

This has left the company free to offer the site for sale on an unconditional basis.
