Police cars should be equipped with ‘black box’ recorders

ALL police cars should be fitted with aircraft-style ‘back boxes’ amid concerns over the number of people killed or injured in high-speed pursuits, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.Around 40 people die each year and hundreds are injured by police vehicles hitting other cars or pedestrians, while answering emergency calls. Last year, forces in England and Wales paid out about £3.5 million to those injured in crashes with police cars. The Commission believes that ‘black boxes’, which record information such as vehicle speed and braking distances, would help crash investigators determine how a crash occurred and help restore confidence in the police.
