Volkswagen renews interest in Proton
Volkswagen has arranged imminent talks with the state investment body controlling Malaysian-owned Proton to discuss either joint projects or taking a stake in the company. Earlier talks between Volkswagen and Proton's controlling shareholder collapsed in January 2006, reportedly because the Malaysian state investment agency was reluctant to accept the German manufacturer's requirement that it relinquish its 'golden share' in Proton. The outcome of protracted talks between the Malaysian authorities and several western manufacturers to date will affect the control of the Proton subsidiary Lotus Group.
