Auditor puts brakes on £500,000 police luxury cars

NORTH Yorkshire Police force has been rebuked for spending £500,000 on a fleet of luxury cars for senior officers which they were not trained to drive. The force bought a fleet of 20 Land Rover Discoveries and Volvo V70s three years ago when Della Canning was chief constable. However, acquisition of the vehicles has now been criticised in an internal audit report, which also reveals that ‘officers are not trained to handle these vehicles, classed as ‘Advanced’ by the force and so it may be inadvisable for them to do so without such training’.
