After clocking up the walking miles at last week's hugely well-received CV Show, I resumed normal service this week, attending the Technician Professional Development Conference where high on the agenda was the hot topic of skills in the commercial vehicle industry.
The attraction, recruitment and retention of staff is essential to the success of any business and for the CV sector, a key issue is technicians. As well as making the industry attractive as a working environment, we also have to provide a clear and valued career path. An interesting suggestion that was discussed centred on some form of licensing system. This would be delivered through membership of a professional body, along the lines of the German model, where technicians and engineers are valued members of society. Whatever route is chosen it's up to us as an industry to grasp this. We can't and shouldn't wait for government, however well intentioned politicians may be.
