SMMT TRANSPORT NEWS BRIEF

While car production often hogs the headlines, it's interesting to note that the two longest running automotive factories in the UK both produce commercial vehicles.
General Motors' Vauxhall facility in Luton has been continually in operation since 1905, while Leyland started production in 1907.
The Vauxhall plant has recently had a £168 million investment to build the new generation of Vivaro van, guaranteeing the plant's future until at least 2025.

Car plants get most of the political and media attention due to their scale, speed and all those robots, but while making CVs may not seem as glamorous, the manufacturing and engineering challenges are much the same as those of a car.
All that automation in a car plant gives one minute cycle times but the greater station complexity in a CV plant means these will be much longer.
